<span style="font-family: Arial"><h2 style="text-align: center">Animal Caretaker IV-Animal Care Program</h2><h3 style="text-align: center">Animal Care Program</h3><br><h4>Job Summary</h4>Under the administrative direction of the Facility Operations Coordinator and Associate Director of the Animal Care Program, the Animal Caretaker IV is responsible for the direct oversight of operations at a ACP managed animal facility. <h4>Duties & Responsibilities</h4><ul><li>• Supervises and trains subordinate staff, part-time staff and student employees.<br>• Schedules, assigns, and establishes work priorities for animal care staff.<br>• Provides primary contact between research staff and animal facilities for issues relating to animal care services, regulatory compliance and institutional animal care policies.<br>• Correct minor problems or consults with ACP administrative staff in correction of major problems and conflicts.<br>• Manages and maintains facility inventory and supplies inventory to include food, bedding and animal care equipment.</li><li>• Responsible for coordinating the use of facility space and equipment.<br>• Assists the veterinary and veterinary technician staff with implementation of medical treatment and special medical care for animals.</li><li>• Evaluates employees’ performance and provides counsel or assistance to employees.<br>• Advises the administrative staff on facility equipment, maintenance, repair, and renovation requirements.<br>• Maintain lists of suppliers of animals, sources of supplies and equipment and assist in selection of animal care products.</li><li>• Performs related duties as assigned.<br>• Assists in selection and termination of employees.<br>• Advise and assist in preparing standard operating procedures for animal care, room sanitation, environmental control, and use of equipment.</li></ul><br><h4>Additional Physical Demands</h4>Physical<br>Duties combine sedentary office work with moderate and occasionally heavy physical exertion including bending and lifting. Environmental conditions may include exposure to such things as dust, dander, fur, high humidity, wet floors, cold rooms, odors, excreta, noise and debris. Physical demands may involve standing for long periods on concrete floors which may be slippery/wet.<br><br>Work Environment<br>Work is performed in indoor animal quarters, laboratories, classrooms, and offices. There are inherent risks to the work assigned such as animal allergies, animal bites, scratches or kicks. The wearing of Personal Protective Attire (PPE) is required such as but not necessarily limited to gloves, lab coat or uniform, dust mask or respirator. It may be required that the employee shower upon arrival or prior to leaving a work environment.<br><h4>Minimum Qualifications</h4><p>1. High school diploma or equivalent.<br>2. Any one or combination totaling four (4) years (48 months) from the categories below:<br><span style="white-space: pre"> </span>A. Coursework in animal science, biological science, veterinary technology, zoology, or a closely related field, as measured by the following conversion table or its proportional equivalent:</p><ul><li>30 semester hours equals one (1) year (12 months)</li><li>Associate’s Degree (60 semester hours) equals eighteen months (18 months)</li><li>90 semester hours equals two (2) years (24 months)</li><li>Bachelor’s Degree (120 semester hours) equals three (3) years (36 months)</li></ul><p><span style="white-space: pre"> </span>B. Work experience in an animal care facility which could include a research laboratory, veterinary hospital, veterinary clinic, intensive or industrial animal farm, or closely related experience.<br>3. Two (2) years (24 months) of supervisory or administrative experience in an animal care facility which could include a research laboratory, veterinary hospital, veterinary clinic, intensive or industrial animal farm, or closely related experience.</p><h4>Knowledge, Skills and Abilities</h4><p>• Knowledge of “The Guide for the Care and Use of Animals” and the Animal Welfare Act Regulations</p><p>• Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Microsoft Outlook and Microsoft Excel</p><p>• Knowledge of UIUC Policy and Rules</p><p>• Knowledge of proper use of PPE and other safety precautions</p><p>• Ability to read and understand Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s)</p><p>• Ability to apply basic arithmetic skills</p><p>• Ability to provide safe care of animals including handling and restraint.</p><p>• Ability to maintain animal health and facility records</p><p>• Ability to operate facility equipment including sanitization and sterilization equipment. </p><p>• Ability to mix detergents and develop knowledge of cleaning animal cages effectively.</p><p>• Ability to observe animals, recognizing and reporting changes in eating or drinking habits and general behavior and outward signs of disease or abnormal appearance.</p><p>• Must have the ability to prioritize work</p><p>• Must have the ability to work independently</p><p>• Must have the ability to train and supervise staff</p><p>• Must have the ability to multitask</p><p>• Must meet deadlines</p><p>• Must have the ability to plan for upcoming needs</p><p>• Must understand husbandry and needs of multiple species</p><p>• Must understand the general aims of the research protocols</p><p>• Must have decision making ability as well as knowing when to consult with supervisors</p><p>• Must monitor daily operations to trouble shoot and resolve issues</p><p>• Must be able to maintain accurate records on a timely basis</p><h4>Appointment Information</h4><p>This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 3710 - Animal Care Coordinator position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after 4/6/2026. This civil service exempt position receives 12 paid holidays a year, 12 cumulative sick days per year, and 25 cumulative vacation days at minimum per year (vacation accrual rate based on service years completed. Salary is between $57,500 - $65,500, commensurate with experience. This position is on-site at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign campus, Monday - Friday, 8am - 4pm with alternating weekend on-calls.
